lyrics

A love from long ago my dear, sung of coin and spell
The secrets of apollo inside a wishing well

They were yet young when he first took leave, she held an empty cup
On his back there was a sieve and cloth all folded up

For a stream with gold he had heard tell by one who'd seen the way
A ring of gold he'd make his bell, for their wedding day

Was one year since he first had gone, and set on his return
at home there was a baby fawn and woman he had spurned

there was no hew of joy on her face when he back to town
with ring and coin all wrapped in lace, stood the fool and clown

for it was another man who held, the lady and the fawn
absence for a year to weld, his fate for having gone

with note on door he left the ring for his baby boy
for the girl who'd make him sing, and bring him lasting joy

his last act was of kindness as he walked down to the well
dumped his wealth to blindness, a prayer became a spell

the god's took pity on the poor man, and gave him final rest
a ring that's passed through many a hand, eternally to be blessed
